Owner Drivers
TRUCKIES VOICE THEIR PAIN TO THE PUBLIC

A delegation of TWU Owner Drivers will be out in force at a major supermarket today voicing their unliveable working conditions.

Thousands of Owner Drivers in Queensland and across Australia have informed the TWU that major retailers like Woolworths and Coles aren't absorbing the spikes in fuel prices.

TWU Owner Driver Frank Black said, "We are being forced to drive longer hours just to stay above the poverty line."

"Woolworths and Coles have increased their grocery prices due to the petrol hikes but they haven't passed this money onto their drivers."

According to new figures by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government there has been a 5.4% increase in heavy vehicle fatalities across Australia, 44 on QLD Roads this year and fatigue is a major contributor to heavy vehicle accidents.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, "TWU Drivers are also calling on the Federal Government to develop legislation to protect independent drivers, with a system of safe enforceable rates and cost recovery from the major retailers."

The TWU also call on the public to think twice about where they purchase their goods from.

Protest: 10.30am, Friday 25th of July, Woolworths, Corner of Queen Street and Edward Street in Brisbane's CBD.
