Bus Safety
WE NEED SEATBELTS IN SCHOOL BUSES NOW

The Transport Workers Union is calling on the QLD Government to hurry up and install seatbelts into every school bus.

The call comes after thirteen high school students were taken to hospital with whip lash type injuries after a truck ran into the back of their school bus near Gympie in south-east Queensland.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, "The children sustained these injuries because there weren't any seatbelts on the bus."

"QLD families are lucky the impact of the crash wasn't bigger."

The TWU will be lobbying all levels of Government to get seatbelts fitted on every school bus in Queensland.

Mr Williams said, "The cost should not come into it. Seatbelts are a preventative safety measure on our roads and if a child losses their life because they didn't have a seatbelt to wear it will be on the Government's hands."
