Bus Safety
The TWU hopes to achieve a commitment from the State Government that seatbelts will be mandatory in school buses

The Transport Workers Union will today meet with Transport Minister John Mickel to discuss the need for seatbelts in Queensland school buses.

The TWU called for this meeting, after 13 high school students were taken to hospital with whip lash type injuries after a truck ran into the back of their school bus near Gympie last week.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, "Had the impact of the crash been harder, these children could have been seriously hurt."

Mr Williams said, "Seatbelts are a necessity on our roads. They help save lives."

"The Minister should not be jeopardising the safety of our children because of the cost of fitting seatbelts in school buses."

The QLD Council of Parents and Citizens Associations, the Parliamentary Travel Safe Committee and MP for Maryborough Chris Foley support the TWU's campaign for seatbelts to be fitted on every school bus in Queensland."

The Meeting:
