Brisbane City Council's Garbage Contract
THE TWU WON'T STAND FOR RUBBISH

The Transport Workers' Union will today meet with the prospective tenderers for the kerbside collection of waste and recycling for the City of Brisbane.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, "Brisbane City Council's Waste and Recycling contract is one of the State's most important contracts and we need to make sure the right company is awarded the job."

In the lead up to the requests for tenderers for this contract, the TWU meet with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and gained his written assurance that the successful contractor will look after the welfare of its workers and retain the same employment terms and conditions presently imposed.

Mr Williams said, "In the past the incoming contractor won the contract because they offered the cheapest labour price to Brisbane City Council and they paid their workers poorly, often below the poverty line."

Mr Williams said, "The TWU will be keeping a close eye on the progress of Brisbane City Council's Waste and Recycling contract to make sure Lord Mayor Campbell Newman keeps his word and awards the contract to a company who will look after their workers."

Mr Williams said, "If Brisbane City Council decides to award the contract to a company that will rip off their workers and undercut their employment terms and conditions, garbage will be left in the streets of Brisbane."

The TWU will meet with Lord Mayor Campbell Newman and the prospective tenderers at Brisbane City Hall at 11am.

Media Opportunity: 10.40am, Friday 3rd October out the front of Brisbane City Hall.
