Rail Safety Meeting
THE TWU'S RAIL CROSSING SAFETY PLAN

Following a meeting with the QR Taskforce the Transport Workers' Union has decided to endorse a number of safety measures to improve the State's line crossings.

The TWU will be lobbying the State Government for:

1. A line crossing education program

2. Maps that highlight and list where line crossings are positioned and legislation that makes employers responsible for educating their drivers about line crossings

3. Stop signs at every rail crossing

4. Rumble strips 200 - 250 metres before the rail crossing

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, "These safety initiatives can be implemented straight away."

"It would only take one day to erect a stop sign and lay down rumble strips."

Mr Williams said, "Safety improvements at rail crossings need to happen now, not in six to 12 months time."

The TWU started their Rail Safety Campaign following the recent fatalities at line crossings in Queensland.

Mr Williams said, "It is about time we stop talking and start making our roads and rail crossings safer."
