Rock throwing offenders
THE TWU WELCOMES NEW LEGISLATION FOR ROCK THROWING OFFENDERS

The Transport Workers' Union welcomes the Queensland Government's plan to implement tough new legislation targeting rock throwers.

The new legislation proposed by Premier Anna Bligh and Attorney-General Cameron Dick would see offenders who endanger the safe use of a vehicle, including throwing rocks at cars, imposed with a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment regardless of whether someone was hurt in the incident.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams welcomes the tough new penalties but says more can be done to safe guard motorists.

"While the tough new laws may make offenders think twice before endangering the lives of motorists, preventative measures are needed."

The TWU calls on Premier Anna Bligh and the Queensland Transport Minister Rachel Nolan to install security fencing on every overhead bridge in Queensland.

"By putting security fences on every overhead bridge in Queensland you physically prevent offenders being able to throw projectiles onto vehicles."

The TWU seeks a meeting with the new Transport Minister to discuss this matter further.
