| Fatigue Kills |
According to data from the Queensland Transport Department as of Sunday 13th December there have been 54 heavy vehicle fatalities on Queensland roads. A 13% increase over the previous 5 year average and fatigue is a major contributor. TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams said, drivers should not be forced to break Fatigue Management Laws just to get stock on shelves this Christmas. "The lives of truck driver's, motorists and families are more important than a Christmas turkey." Under the Fatigue Management Act drivers can work up to 12 hours but must have 7 continuous hours of stationary rest time. The TWU also urges motorists to plan their trips, stop, revive and respect heavy vehicles on our roads this Christmas. "If we all play our part we should be able to enjoy a fatality free christmas," Mr Williams said. Road Safety - A TWU Priority |
