The TWU supports the review of truck fatalitiesState Coroner Michael Barnes will review fatal crashes involving heavy vehicles in a bid to reduce the heavy vehicle road toll. The call comes after 65 people were killed in heavy vehicle fatalities last year, 16 more than the previous year and 10 people have lost their lives this year. Mr Barnes told The Sunday Mail, "He will review the fatal crashes and decide whether an inquest is needed to identify the factors that caused the deaths." If a joint inquest is called, then the Coroner will have the power to require truckies' log books be produced and trucking company bosses and drivers give evidence. TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams welcomes the review and says it's a well known fact that fatigue plays a major role in truck drivers deaths and it's time we found out what is causing their fatigue. I.E. Illegal hours.
