Extra Protection needed for Bus Drivers

The TWU is calling for extra protection/security measures for bus drivers following an incident in Surfers Paradise last night.

A female bus driver was robbed and assaulted by two male youths at Arundel for her cash box.

TWU Branch Secretary Hughie Williams says, "Why wasn't there a security guard on this late night bus service?"

Mr Williams says, "How many bus drivers need to be assaulted before something is done?"

The TWU is calling on the QLD Government to:

- Provide extra security on buses

- Introduce new laws into Parliament (similar to the proposed new laws for ambulance officers) that will increase penalties for assaulting bus drivers

- Provide safety and security training for bus drivers
