TRANSPORT RESOLUTIONSThe Transport Workers' Union of Australia will today meet with the Federal Transport Department in a bid to resolve a number of serious transport issues. In the yearto July 2007, 228 people died in heavy vehicle accidents in Australia, 65 on Queensland Roads. The TWU will be seeking: - National Regulations that provide transport workers with safe rates and safe conditions and - Fuel recovery costs for owner drivers QLD Branch Secretary Hughie Williams says, "If we had a set rate of pay for truck drivers drivers wouldn't be forced to do excessive hours on our roads." Mr Williams says, "Australia's heavy vehicle road toll continues to climb and we need real safety measures in place." The TWU Branch Secretary also states that, "Due to Australia's high fuel prices, a fuel recovery cost system is needed for owner drivers otherwise we could start to see a dramatic decline in truck drivers and fewer products on our shelves." The Transport Workers Union of Australia is also meeting with senators in Canberra to gain support for their fuel/safe rates and safe conditions campaign. |
