CUTS AT PRESS CONFERENCE: COME ON QANTASThe Transport Workers' Union of Australia has labelled Qantas's annoucement as disgusting and a kick in the teeth for Australian workers and their families. Qantas Chief Executive Geoff Dixon announced at a Press Conference this morning the axeing of 1500 jobs worldwide and the scrapping of hire plans for 1200 workers due to fuel increases. TWU National Airline Executive said, "TWU Members are disgusted that they had to hear about the possibility of losing their jobs at a press conference instead of through consultation." "It just goes to show how much Qantas care about the welfare of their hard working employees." The TWU also believe Qantas isn't telling their workforce the real reason behind the job cuts, based on the information provided. "Qantas secured 60% of this years fuel at $112 a barrel ($63 under market value), Qantas increased their ticket prices to cater for the fuel increases which JP Morgan predicts a 5% easing of profit for Qantas and fuel prices across the country are falling." "Qantas is also on track to record another billion dollar profit this year and they achieved huge profits in the last five years." The TWU is calling on Qantas to come clean about their profit agenda and consult their workforce about their future. |
