Just days after the Senate voted to abolish the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal, there has been a fatal accident on the Warrego Highway. Every fatality that we see on the road is too many, and too often drivers are under pressure to complete jobs as quickly as possible which ultimately leads to fatigued and stressed drivers subjecting themselves to dangerous conditions in their workplace.
As the TWU marches in Canberra today, it becomes apparent that outrageous scaremongering doesn’t save lives. Instead, it gives confidence to the big businesses which routinely force truck drivers into a race to the bottom for pay and conditions. Peter Biagini, TWU QLD Branch Secretary said today “The abolition of the RSRT will do absolutely nothing to stop the deaths on our roads, and letting Owner Drivers work for chump change will be detrimental to all road users
“I want to see what plans Turnbull and Lazarus actually have for road safety, because as far as I can see this was just a win for conservative politicians and big businesses like Coles and Woolworths”
“The Transport Workers’ Union will always fight for Safe Rates and safe roads – the carnage needs to stop”
