Reports that an individual breached perimeter fences and was able to access vehicles and potentially aircraft at the Cairns airport highlight the dangers faced by transport workers.

Security at the Cairns airport has suffered a massive blow after reports that an individual was able to access secure areas, vehicles, and potentially aircraft early on Friday morning.

At 3am, reports are that an individual scaled the fence at the Cairns airport, attempted to start vehicles used by ground staff, damaging a vehicle in the process, accessed staff uniforms, approached aircraft, and then started a different vehicle.

TWU Queensland Secretary Peter Biagini said that the incident shows a shocking lack of security at the Cairns airport.

“It’s ridiculous that this person was able to access the secure areas” said Biagini.

“TWU members at the airport deserve to be safe in their workplace, and the travelling public needs to feel safe as well”

“We don’t know when the incident was first uncovered, or if a full security sweep was done afterwards”

“We’ve heard nothing from the airport or the police”

“The safety of employees and the public must be prioritised, and the Federal Government needs to ensure that is happening”

“Staff have still not been advised if the airport is all clear”

The TWU is continuing to fight for safe and secure workplaces all over Queensland.
