Cairns Sunbus drivers are calling for a fair rate of pay after years of doing the same job as other Sunbus bus drivers on the Translink network, but being paid less.
TWU Queensland Secretary Peter Biagini said today that Translink was responsible to make sure that there was equality throughout Translink controlled routes.
“Our members are sick of hearing from their employers that they can’t receive a fair rate of pay because Translink does not fund rates of pay above the award” said Biagini.
“The reality is that these drivers are doing the same job as Sunbus drivers in Townsville and the Sunshine Coast, and are getting paid less”
“Every time there is an issue with employees getting stiffed, it comes back to Translink not providing the necessary funding”
“These bus drivers work for the same company, which is contracted by the same organisation – Translink”
“Translink provides the funding for these routes, and they need to stop putting pressure on drivers by refusing to provide the funding that’s needed to give them a fair wage”
“We marched on Translink last week demanding greater safety for our bus drivers, we’re not afraid to hold Translink to account on this issue as well”
TWU members will be stopping work for 24 hours, from midnight Thursday to midnight Friday the 7th of October.
