Transport Workers’ Union State Secretary Peter Biagini will hold a press conference today at 1.30pm at the Ipswich Transit Centre calling for immediate action for drivers using the unsafe facility.
“This derelict blood stained facility is disgusting and we support drivers who do not want to use it,” Mr Biagini said.
And while the LNP Government continues to blame the previous government for not doinganything, the reality is this government has been responsible for the past 12 months of the two years it’s been closed.
“The Member of Ipswich Ian Berry said it is the last government’s fault, but considering most of this State was well on the way to recovery pre-election, those that remained are this governments responsibility.”
“Mr Berry also said the new Riverlink facilities were built purposely in place of the Transit Centre, yet his government’s authority, Translink, know the facilities are not big enough for all drivers, hence why the Transit Centre is still on driver’s routes as their break point.”
“Drivers are also forced to use this facility well into the evening, which in winter is a very dark, cold place.”
“We support our members who use alternative facilities to this occupational health and safety hazard, and the images of smashed glass and blood stains prove why.”
“Translink has a right to look after its employees, and this is a clear disregard to basic workers rights.”
“The solution is simple.”
“It is an unsafe facility for drivers and we want Transport Minister Scott Emerson to make the decision to ban it or fix it.”
TWU State Secretary Peter Biagini will be onsite at 1.30pm.
The Ipswich Transit Centre is located off the corner of Bremer and Bell Street, beneath the bridge in the Ipswich CBD.
