The TWU is pleased to announce that for the second year in a row, JJ Richards has taken out the award for TWU Queensland’s ‘Worst Employer of the Year’.
“We are protesting outside JJ Richards today to highlight our concerns on the company’s bullying tactics and their disregard to workplace health and safety,” TWU State Secretary Peter Biagini said.
Yesterday inspectors from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland visited the JJ Richards Toowoomba site to investigate whether the company has been handling asbestos and to test for its presence.
“For too long JJ Richards across Queensland have treated employees with disrespect and disregard and refused to acknowledge their responsibilities,” Mr Biagini said.
“We had one JJ Richards driver in North Queensland who fell out of a truck in the yard, hit their head and had a heart attack, only for the company to ignore it and not even call an ambulance.”
“Where is their duty of care?”
“Another worker came back from work-cover only for the company to humiliate them by making them stand at the base of the tip all day with a whistle to blow whenever a bird landed on the rubbish. It’s demeaning and just plain bullying,” Mr Biagini said.
“JJ Richards are responsible for the safety and well being of their employees and they should know that the TWU are not going anywhere.”
“We will continue our fight to improve drivers’ rights and conditions and bring this company’s waste management standards up,” Mr Biagini said.
The TWU will protest outside JJ Richards Toowoomba today at 2.30pm and present the company with a box of prized rotten tomatoes for their much-deserved award.
